When Veterans Day Began

Veterans Day was first established in 1919 to commemorate the armistice signed on November 11, 1918, marking the end of World War I. Originally called Armistice Day, the holiday was renamed Veterans Day in 1954 to honor veterans of all wars, recognizing the sacrifices of those who served in the military during both wartime and peace.

Where It Started

In 1945, World War II veteran Raymond Weeks of Birmingham, Alabama, proposed expanding Armistice Day to honor all veterans, not just those who died in World War I. Weeks presented his idea to Gen. Dwight Eisenhower, who supported the creation of National Veterans Day. The first celebration of Veterans Day took place in Birmingham, Alabama, and Weeks is often referred to as the “Father of Veterans Day.”

Interesting Facts About Veterans Day

The Name Matters: Veterans Day is spelled without an apostrophe. This emphasizes that the day does not belong to veterans but is a day for honoring all veterans.

The Date is Fixed: Veterans Day is always observed on November 11, regardless of the day of the week. Some parades and events may occur the weekend before or after to allow more people to participate.

It’s Not Memorial Day: Veterans Day is often confused with Memorial Day. While Memorial Day honors those who died in military service, Veterans Day celebrates all military veterans, living or deceased, and thanks them for their service.

How to Honor Veterans on Veterans Day

There are many meaningful ways to show appreciation for veterans:

1. Send Care Packages: Organizations like Operation Gratitude and Soldiers’ Angels help send care packages to active-duty service members and veterans.

2. Donate: Support local Veterans Affairs offices or nonprofit organizations that assist veterans.

3. Fly the Flag: Display the American flag to show your support and appreciation.

4. Invite Veterans to Speak: Schools and businesses can invite veterans to share their experiences, helping students and employees learn about the sacrifices and dedication of those who serve.

Final Thoughts

Veterans Day is an opportunity to thank and honor the men and women who serve or have served in the military. Whether through acts of kindness, participation in ceremonies, or simply expressing gratitude, there are countless ways to show support for those who protect our freedom.
